Walking out of the locker room after losing an overtime hockey game was the worst feeling I've ever had. I did not want to talk to anyone. I felt like I failed my team, like it was my fault. I had been socialized to think that after losing I was supposed to act a certain way. It had never crossed my mind to think differently about that sort of situation, like to act like everything was ok, or to be positive about the results. In my mind this sort of socialization could be a positive or negative influence on me, or the United States. I thought it is a positive influence because we had just lost a hockey game and to anyone that would not be a good feeling. This could be a good thing with society because you want to work had at the next game and try harder. This could be a bad thing because things could go out of proportion and people could get competitive.
Being socialized through athletics can have a huge influence on your overall view on life. The reason I am saying this is because I know it has made a huge impact on my life. The thing that I have seen through my experience in athletics is the different types of sports. I play two sports with very different types of socialization figures, Hockey sets the standard for me to be a part of the hockey team. We as a team are socialized to be tough and work hard. I have been socialized through the sport to act in more specific ways, such as getting upset after losing a game. In the U.S different sports socialize you in different ways. For example soccer had previously socialized me so that I was able to show emotion, and it made me want to be with other people in different groups or interests. “Studies in the United States show that kids are encouraged to play sports because it shows improvement in your academics and social skills” (Kids and Sports, The Child Study Center.).
The gender role plays a big role in your socialization through athletics. In the U.S. “66% of boys play organized sports, meaning that boys ages 5-14 are being socialized through either their family or friends to play sports. There are 35 million kids playing organized sports each year, out of all these kids 65% play the sports so that they can be with friends. The 65% percent of kids that play for the friends” (Statistic Brain.com) I am one of them I have been playing sports that I got involved in because my friends had been involved with the sport. This was a positive influence on me because the sports that I played because of them made me realize that this is what I like and It became a huge part of my life.
What sports could put a positive or negative influence on you, surrounding your parents in different ways, and your friends in differents ways? Different sports in the U.S. can put a positive or negative influence on you. In my experience this can be a very negative influence on the male population. This has become bad because what I have seen in the past is good behaviors around your parents, you act in a completely different way around the people that have positively influenced you such as your parents, grandparents, parents friends, and your friends parents.
I have been socialized to act in different ways around my parents in a positive way, and I have been socialized in a negative way to act different ways around my friends. I think this is negative because it separates your identity in two. I think sports in the U.S have a big part in this socialization because you want to be this person all your friends are pretending to be in a way that all the kids playing that sport should act like.
In our society today you can clearly see the positive and negative influences on the athletes playing sports. The negative influences are the people you surround yourself with on a daily basis that tell you, or socialize you, to be someone who you are not. The positive influences are the people on your sports teams that have common interests. “If you play sports, they are a huge role in gender socialization, and shape you to be who you are.

Socialization Reflection
Jake Beekmann
1. Mask: I am most proud of the resemblance from my socialization as a guy, on the blue side of the mask. And that relating to playing a role on athletics. I am most proud of how it showed the different sports I have played, and the positive or negative influence on it. Even though It might not have been clear to see the difference between positive and negative, I was able to explain it very easily.
2. Quote: Walking out of the locker room after losing an overtime hockey game was the worst feeling I've ever had. I did not want to talk to anyone. I felt like I failed my team, like it was my fault.
I am most proud of this quote because I felt like it was eye catching and really summarized my essay in a very good way.
3. Biggest Takeaway: I will remember how I was able to look back on the past things that I have either a negative influence or was a very positive influence. I will remember how I was really impressed about how my writing can discover so much about myself.
4. Habit of Heart and Mind: The Habit of Heart and Mind that I could most improve on would be evidence. Evidence was the weakest part of my essay, because the topic of my paragraphs had little evidence to support everything I was relating to.
